Inside the book

Sun up! It is day. The rooster wakes and crows, and the owl in the big oak tree tucks in to sleep. Moon up! It is night. The sky turns deep blue, the stars come out, and the owl opens its big round eyes. Page by page the light flips: the mouse is up by day, the cat is up at night. At the end the sun says bye, the moon says hi, and the whole farm waves.

The new words in this book

day

The time when the sun is up and the sky is light. It comes up 8 times, and every time the sun climbs up, the sky turns blue and the rooster and the mouse wake up.

night

The time when the moon is up and the sky is dark. It comes up 8 times, and every time the moon climbs up, the sky turns deep blue, the stars come out and the owl and the cat wake up.

Made for children just starting kindergarten. Each page has one short sentence (3 to 5 words) in one pattern: “Day! Rooster is up.” / “Night! Owl is up.” Only one word changes, so a child can say the page with you by the third spread. Every other word is one a 4-year-old already knows, like sun, moon, cat, mouse, owl and up.

Questions to ask while you read

Pause after each spread and ask one question. There are no right answers; the point is to get your child talking.

  1. 1What is coming up over the hills? Is it day now?
  2. 2Who is waking up? What does the rooster say?
  3. 3What is in the sky now? Is it day or night?
  4. 4Can you see the owl in the big tree? Say “Hoo, hoo!”
  5. 5Is the mouse awake? Where is the sun?
  6. 6Who is up at night? What does the cat say?
  7. 7Shh! Why is the owl going to sleep?
  8. 8Shh! Where does the rooster sleep at night?
  9. 9Tap the sun or the moon. Is it day or night now?
  10. 10Wave bye to the day and hi to the night!

Tips for parents

  • First time: use Read to me and just enjoy the pictures together. It takes about a minute and a half.
  • Act the words: open your arms wide like the sun on “day”, close your eyes and rest your head on “night”.
  • Read it again and pause before “day” or “night” on each page, so your child can look at the sky and say it.
  • At bedtime, look out of the window together: is the sun up or the moon up?
