Kai gets dressed all by himself. His red shirt has a yellow duck on the front. Oops! He puts it on, and the duck is on his back. Spin, spin: now the duck is on the front! Then his blue cap goes on back to front, and even Toy Robot’s face ends up on the back of its head. Spin, spin, and everything is the right way round. At sunset Kai leads a toy parade, with Cat marching at the back.

The new words in this book
The side that faces forward, where your face and tummy are. It comes up 8 times, and every time the picture shows it: the duck on the front of Kai’s shirt, the cap’s peak over his eyes, Robot’s face, and Kai leading the line.
The other side, behind you. It comes up 7 times: Kai turns round and the duck is on his back, the cap’s peak points behind his head, Robot’s face is on the back of its head, and Cat walks at the back of the parade.
Made for children just starting kindergarten. Each page has one short sentence (3 to 6 words) in one pattern: “Oops! Cap on the back!” / “Spin, spin! Cap on the front!” Only one word changes, so a child can say the page with you by the third spread. Every other word is one a 4-year-old already knows, like duck, cap, cat, face and spin. Getting dressed the right way round is something every small child is learning, so the words come with a real-life job.
Questions to ask while you read
Pause after each spread and ask one question. There are no right answers; the point is to get your child talking.
- 1What is on Kai’s shirt? Where is the duck?
- 2Oops! Where did the duck go?
- 3Spin round like Kai! Where is the duck now?
- 4Where is the cap’s peak pointing?
- 5Can you spin the cap round to the front?
- 6Where is Robot’s face? Is that silly?
- 7Spin, spin! Can you see Robot’s face now?
- 8Who is at the front of the line? Who is at the back?
- 9Tap a toy. Is it showing its front or its back?
- 10Who is at the back of the parade? Can you march like Cat?

Tips for parents
- First time: use Read to me and just enjoy the pictures together. It takes about a minute and a half.
- Act the words: pat your tummy on “front”, pat your back on “back”, and spin round on “spin, spin”.
- Read it again and pause before the last word of each page, so your child can say “front” or “back”.
- Use it when getting dressed: find the label on a T-shirt together. The label goes at the back!
