Inside the book

Fifi is a little fox with a red and yellow kite. On a windy hill by the sea, high goes the kite! Low goes the crab on the sand. High goes the seagull, low goes the turtle under the waves. Fifi jumps high and crouches low. Then the wind stops and the kite falls low, right next to the crab. The crab holds it up, whoosh, the wind comes back, and high goes the kite again. At sunset the kite is high and the sun is low.

The new words in this book

high

Far up, near the sky. It comes up 8 times, and every time something on the page really goes up high: the kite, the seagull and Fifi’s big jump.

low

Down near the ground. It comes up 8 times: the crab scuttles low on the sand, the turtle dives low under the waves, Fifi crouches low, the kite falls low and the sun sinks low into the sea.

Made for children just starting kindergarten. Each page has one short sentence (3 to 6 words) in one pattern: “High goes the kite!” / “Low goes the crab.” Only one word changes, so a child can say the page with you by the third spread. Every other word is one a 4-year-old already knows, like kite, bird, crab, turtle and sun.

Questions to ask while you read

Pause after each spread and ask one question. There are no right answers; the point is to get your child talking.

  1. 1Where is the kite going? Point up high!
  2. 2Where is the crab? Is it high or low?
  3. 3Where is the seagull flying?
  4. 4Where did the turtle go?
  5. 5Can you jump high like Fifi?
  6. 6Can you crouch low like Fifi?
  7. 7Oh no! Where did the kite fall?
  8. 8Who helped the kite? Say “Whoosh!”
  9. 9Tap a friend. Does it go high or low?
  10. 10What is high, and what is low, at sunset?

Tips for parents

  • First time: use Read to me and just enjoy the pictures together. It takes about a minute and a half.
  • Act the words: stretch up tall on “high”, crouch down low on “low”.
  • Read it again and pause before “high” or “low”, so your child can say it.
  • On the tapping page, let your child guess “High!” or “Low!” before each tap.
