Momo is a little bunny who lives in a hole in a sunny meadow. She looks out of the hole, hops out, and hops back in. A mole pops out of a molehill and pops back in. A little blue bird hops in and hops out. Momo pulls out a big orange carrot. At night, Momo hops in for the night.

The two new words

Going inside, like down into a hole. It comes up 6 times, and every time someone really drops down into a hole: Momo, the mole, the little bird, and all the friends in the hole game.

out

Coming from inside to the outside, like up out of a hole. It comes up 7 times: Momo peeks out and hops out, the mole and the bird pop out, Momo pulls a carrot out of the soil, and the friends pop out in the game.

Made for children just starting kindergarten. Each page has one short sentence (3 to 6 words) in one pattern: “Momo hops out.” / “Momo hops in.” Only one word changes, so a child can say the page with you by the third spread. Every other word is one a 4-year-old already knows, like bird, hole, carrot, pop and night.

Questions to ask while you read

Pause after each spread and ask one question. There are no right answers; the point is to get your child talking.

Tips for parents

  • First time: use Read to me and just enjoy the pictures together. It takes about a minute and a half.
  • Act the words: crouch down small on “in”, jump up tall on “out”.
  • Read it again and pause before the last word of each page, so your child can say “in” or “out”.
  • On the hole game, let your child say “Out!” before each tap and “In!” when the friend drops back down.
