Luna is a little unicorn in a rainbow meadow. When she is happy, her horn sparkles. Then a big grey cloud hides the sun, the rainbow fades, and so does Luna’s horn. Bunny brings a flower, Bluebird sings a song, and a big hug makes her horn bright again. But the grey cloud is crying, all alone.

The two new words

sparkle

To shine with tiny flashes of light. It comes up 8 times, and every time golden sparkles really burst from Luna’s horn, the flowers or the stars.

fade

To slowly get pale and go away. It comes up 7 times: the rainbow, Luna’s smile, her horn, the flowers, the grey on the cloud and, at the end, the day.

The refrain “Sparkle, little horn!” comes back on three spreads, so a young reader can say it along. The two words are a pair the pictures show side by side: a gold horn that sparkles and a grey horn that fades. Every other word is a common word, like rainbow, cloud, flower, hug and friends.

Questions to ask while you read

Pause after each spread and ask one question. There are no right answers; the point is to get your child talking.

Tips for parents

  • First time: use Read to me and let your child just listen and watch the horn change.
  • Before page four, stop and ask “What will happen to Luna’s horn now?” Let them guess.
  • On the flower page, let your child say “Sparkle!” each time they tap a flower.
  • Try the word card: slide from fade to sparkle and talk about what makes you feel grey or bright.
