The two new words
peekTo take a quick little look. It comes up 8 times, and every time someone really looks round a bush, a tree or a pot.
hiddenPut away where no one can see. It comes up 7 times: Pup, Kitty, the dragon, and at the end, no one.
The text repeats on purpose (“Where is Pup? Pup is hidden.” then “Peek! There is Pup!”), so a pre-reader can say it along by page four. Every other word is a common word, like castle, garden, tree, tail and play.
Questions to ask while you read
Pause after each spread and ask one question. There are no right answers; the point is to get your child talking.
- What can you see at the castle?
- Where would you hide in this garden?
- Where is Pup? How did Rosie find Pup?
- Where is Kitty hiding?
- What is making that sniff, sniff sound?
- It is a dragon! Why do Pup and Kitty run?
- How does the dragon feel? What does Rosie say?
- Is the dragon hidden? What can you see?
- Tap and peek: who is hidden in the garden?
- Who is someone you could invite to play?
Tips for parents
- First time: use Read to me and let your child just listen and watch.
- Before page six, stop and ask “What is hidden in the roses?” Let them guess.
- On the hide-and-seek page, let your child choose where to peek next and say it: “Peek behind the tree!”
- Play it for real: hide a toy under a blanket and let a little tail stick out. “Is it hidden? Peek!”
