Rocket to the Moon

Kai has a shiny red rocket in the back yard. Three, two, one… launch! Kai and Bip the little robot zoom past the stars and land on the Moon. There they meet Mo, the Moon Mouse. Mo’s little rocket can launch, but it can not land. Bip gets out a wrench.
The two new words
To send a rocket up into the sky. It comes up 7 times, and every time a rocket on the page shakes, lights its flame and shoots up.
To come down and stop on the ground. It comes up 8 times, and every time a rocket comes down, down, down and stands with a bump.
Two refrains come back again and again (“Three, two, one… launch!” and “Down, down, down… land!”), so a child can join in by page four. Every other word is a common word, like rocket, moon, stars, up, down and friend.
Questions to ask while you read
Pause after each spread and ask one question. There are no right answers; the point is to get your child talking.

Tips for parents
- First time: use Read to me and let your child just listen and watch.
- Say the countdown together and let your child shout “Launch!”
- Before page six, stop and ask “Can the little rocket land?” Let them guess.
- Play it for real: a paper cup rocket that launches off a hand and lands on a pillow, with “down, down, down… land!”
