Bao is a little panda at a sunny playground. Up, up, up he climbs the steps, and down he comes on the slide. Wheee! Up goes the red ball, into the tree. Down it comes again. A little bird flies up and comes down to sit on Bao’s head. At the end of the day, Bao lies down for a nap.

The two new words

up

Toward the sky, higher. It comes up 8 times, and every time something on the page really goes up: Bao on the steps, the red ball, the little bird, the swing and the toys.

down

Toward the ground, lower. It comes up 6 times: Bao slides down, the ball drops out of the tree, the bird comes down to Bao’s head, the toys land, and Bao lies down for a nap.

Made for children just starting kindergarten, after a teacher asked for something easier. Each page has one short sentence (3 to 6 words) in one pattern: “Up goes the red ball.” / “Down comes the red ball.” Only one word changes, so a child can say the page with you by the third spread. Every other word is one a 4-year-old already knows, like ball, bird, sun, red, little and nap.

Questions to ask while you read

Pause after each spread and ask one question. There are no right answers; the point is to get your child talking.

Tips for parents

  • First time: use Read to me and just enjoy the pictures together. It takes about a minute and a half.
  • Act the words: stretch up tall on “up”, crouch down low on “down”.
  • Read it again and pause before the last word of each page, so your child can say “up” or “down”.
  • On the toy page, let your child say “Up!” before each tap and “Down!” when the toy lands.
