Inside the book

Dino is a baby dinosaur at a picnic in a sunny jungle clearing. He wants to taste everything. Yum! The apple is yummy. Ew! The stick is yucky. The red berries and the banana are yummy, but an old stripy sock is yucky, and so is the wiggly worm the little yellow bird brings him (the bird thinks it is yummy). Then Mama comes with a big strawberry cake, and at sunset there is yummy cake for everyone.

The new words in this book

yummy

Tastes very good, you want more. It comes up 8 times, and every time someone really eats something good: Dino licks his lips and pats his tummy over the apple, the berries, the banana and the cake, with golden sparkles.

yucky

Tastes bad, you want to spit it out. It comes up 7 times: the stick, the old sock, the wiggly worm and a pebble, and each time Dino sticks out his tongue, says “Bleh!” and pushes it away.

Made for children just starting kindergarten. Each page has one short sentence (3 to 6 words) in one pattern: “Yum! The apple is yummy.” / “Ew! The stick is yucky.” Only the thing changes, so a child can say the page with you by the third spread, and the funny faces make the two words easy to tell apart. Every other word is one a 4-year-old already knows, like apple, banana, sock, worm, cake and mama.

Questions to ask while you read

Pause after each spread and ask one question. There are no right answers; the point is to get your child talking.

  1. 1Who is at the picnic? Can you find the little bird?
  2. 2What does Dino eat? Is it yummy?
  3. 3Would you eat a stick? Show me a yucky face!
  4. 4How many red berries can you count?
  5. 5Whose sock is that? Is it yummy or yucky?
  6. 6What colour is the banana? Rub your tummy: yummy!
  7. 7Does the bird like the worm? Does Dino?
  8. 8What is Mama bringing? What is on top of the cake?
  9. 9Tap a thing. Is it yummy or yucky?
  10. 10What time of day is it now? Who gets cake?

Tips for parents

  • First time: use Read to me and just enjoy the pictures together. It takes about a minute and a half.
  • Make the faces: lick your lips and pat your tummy on “yummy”, stick out your tongue on “yucky”.
  • Read it again and pause before the last word of each page, so your child can say “yummy” or “yucky”.
  • At snack time, play the game for real: “Is the apple yummy or yucky?”
