Mia builds a snowman in the little snowy village, and Frosty opens his eyes. They throw snowballs, and Red the robin sits on his hat. Then the sun comes out, big and hot, and Frosty begins to melt. His friends know just what to do.

The two new words

melt

When snow or ice gets warm and turns into water. It comes up 6 times, and every time Frosty drips and sinks into a little puddle, or, at the end, does not.

freeze

When water gets very cold and turns into ice. It comes up 7 times: drips on a roof turn into icicles, a pond turns to ice, and the child freezes the puddles with a tap.

The two words are a pair the pictures show side by side: warm sun, melt; cold night, freeze. Lines repeat on purpose (“Freeze, pond, freeze!”), so a new reader can say them along. Every other word is a common word, like snow, sun, hat, tree, ice and play.

Pause after each spread and ask one question. There are no right answers; the point is to get your child talking.

Tips for parents

  • First time: use Read to me and let your child just listen and watch.
  • On the sun page, stop and ask “What will happen to Frosty?” Let them guess before you turn.
  • On the freeze page, let your child choose the next puddle and say it: “Freeze!”
  • Try it for real: put an ice cube on a plate by the window and one in the freezer. Which one will melt?
